Description:
The British Crime Survey (BCS) was a well-established study carried out for the Home Office and one of the largest social research surveys conducted in England and Wales. The survey was first conducted in 1982 and ran at roughly two yearly intervals until 2001, when it became a continuous survey. Its sample size increased from 37,000 in 2001 to 46,000 in 2011. Respondents are asked directly about their experience of crime, irrespective of whether or not they reported these incidents to the police. As such the BCS provides a record of peoples' experiences of crime which is unaffected by variations in reporting behaviour of victims or variations in police practices of recording crime. This survey was replaced by the Crime Survey for England and Wales which is conducted by the Office for National Statistics
